Create a Web Application and a Site Collection With MOSS 2010

Before any sites can be created, a Web Application must be created first.

 

1.       Click Application Management in the quick launch bar on the left.

2. In the Web Applications section, click Manage web applications.

 

3. In the Ribbon, click the New icon at the left. A Create New Web Application window opens.

4. In the Authentication section:

a. Choose Classic Mode Authentication

 

5. In the IIS Web Site section:

a. Choose Create a new IIS web site

b. Set the port number (it gives you a number by default)

c. Set the Host Header to the name you want (e.g. portal.contoso.com)

d. The Name field will update automatically with these changes

6. In the Application Pool section:

a. Select Create new application pool.

b. Select Configurable.

c. Choose the account for App Pool that you have, if you don’t have one, you can choose the predefined one.

7. In the Database Name and Authentication section:

a. Set the Database Name (you can change it with the name you want, e.g. WSS_Content_Portal)

8. Scroll to the bottom of the window and click OK. It may take a minute or two to create the web application.

 

9. At the Application Created screen click the OK button.

 

 

Create a Site Collection

 

1. On the quick launch bar click Application Management.

 

2. In the Site Collections section click Create site collections.

3. In the Web Application section click the drop down beside your site’s URL (e.g. http://moss) and choose Change Web Application.

4. Select SharePoint – portal.contoso.com80 (or the application name you just created)

 

5. In the Title and Description section…

a. Enter a name for the portal

b. Enter a description for the portal

 

6. In the Template Selection…

a. Choose the template you want (e.g. Publishing Portal)

 

7. For Primary Site Collection Administrator User name enter your administrator account (e.g. contoso\administrator).

 

8. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click OK to create the site collection.

Thanks for the great article here. Creating a web application sometimes can be a really complicated thing. Sometimes even a small error can take a lot of time to solve it. I am creating a mp4 converter at the moment and I must say that it is not an easy thing to do. However such articles as yours really help. Thanks for the article one more time and keep posting them in the future too.
